Listen to LOTS of music

Here’s an easy one! Listen to lots of music, especially the kinds you like and want to play. And not just ukulele music, either!

If you know what the music is supposed to sound like it’s much easier to duplicate when playing. Styles of music have their own “tricks”, signature licks and such. For example, Blues has the various common structures, turnarounds and such, much old Tin Pan Alley is in the AABA verse structure, Ska and Reggae want you to accent the off-beats, etc.

When you’re familiar with the idiom of your favorite music(s) learning new tunes is quite a bit easier.

Sometimes it’s the simple things that make the biggest difference.
